Guide

Measure the glass, then apply it.

Everything you need to order the right size and fit it yourself. All you need is a tape measure and a clean window.

Part 1 · Measure

Measure the glass, not the frame.

We cut to the size you send. Measure only the glass you can see, inside the frame and the beading.

Where to measure a door A front door with a fanlight above and a glass panel in the door. Arrows show the width and height of the visible glass inside the beading of each pane. WIDTH HEIGHT WIDTH HEIGHT Beading don't include Frame don't include
Gold arrows = what to measure. Only the visible glass, for each pane.
  1. Measure the visible glass

Inside the frame and inside the beading, the strip that holds the glass in.

  2. Width at top, middle and bottom

Take three readings and use the smallest one.

  3. Height at left, middle and right

Same again. The smallest reading is the one that counts.

  4. Centimetres, to the millimetre

For example 78.4 cm, not "about 80".

  5. Each pane on its own

If your door has several panes, note the size of each one separately.

  6. Check the glass is smooth

Film needs smooth glass to stick. Textured or patterned glass will not work.

  7. Not sure? Send a photo

A photo of the door with a tape measure in shot helps us check.

Type your readings.

We pick the smallest of each, so the film always fits inside the glass.

Your readings differ by more than 0.5 cm. Your frame may not be square, we'll leave a little extra border.

Part 2 · Inside or outside

Which side of the glass?

It depends on what you ordered. We cut it for the side it goes on.

Always inside

Frosted panels and full-pane film

These go on the inside of the glass. We cut them in reverse, mirrored, so your number or logo reads the right way round from the street.

  • Fit from indoors, in the dry
  • Cut mirrored, reads right from outside
Your choice

Gold numbers and lettering

Most people put these on the outside. You can also fit them inside, where they are protected from weather and window cleaning.

  • Outside: the most common, cut normally
  • Inside: cut mirrored, tell us when you order
Mirrored lettering The number 27 as seen from the street, next to the same number mirrored as you apply it from inside. 27 27 Seen from the street What you apply inside
Why mirrored

Back to front, on purpose.

Film fitted inside is seen through the glass from outside. So the piece you hold looks reversed. That is correct. Don't flip it.

Part 3 · Apply

Fitting numbers and lettering.

For vinyl on transfer tape: house numbers, gold lettering and logos.

  1. Clean the glass

Wash with soapy water, then dry it completely.

  2. Check the temperature

The glass should be above 10 °C.

  3. Make a hinge

Place the design and fix the top edge with a strip of masking tape.

  4. Peel the backing

Lift the design up on its hinge and peel the backing paper away.

  5. Squeegee it down

Lower it onto the glass and press from the centre outward.

  6. Peel the transfer tape

Slowly, folded back on itself at a sharp angle. If a piece lifts, press it back and go again.

  7. Press the edges

Rub down any lifted edges with your finger or the squeegee.

Frosted full-pane film

Use the wet method.

Big pieces of film are easier to fit wet. The water lets you slide it into place.

  1. Spray soapy water

A few drops of washing-up liquid in water. Spray the clean glass and the sticky side of the film.

  2. Slide into place

Lay the film on the wet glass and move it until it lines up with the edges.

  3. Squeegee the water out

Work from the centre to the edges until no water or bubbles are left.

Part 4 · Remove

Taking it off.

Moving house or changing the design? It comes off the glass.

01
Warm it up

Use a hairdryer to warm the film. This softens the glue.

02
Peel slowly

Lift a corner with a fingernail or plastic card and peel it back low and slow.

03
Clean off residue

Wipe any leftover glue with soapy water or a little glass cleaner.
